The "Good" Old Days

Well..yesterday was our monthly PSC luncheon. That's the Patriots Spouses Club...used to be the Officers Club until that became politically incorrect. Anyway, I sit on the board, so I have to attend the luncheons. Generally they are okay, a good friend of mine is the president and she is working diligently on bringing up attendance and making it an enjoyable experience. This month's was actually really interesting, definitely food for thought. The retired spouses gave a little skit on how things used to be done...what an eye opener!
They all marched in wearing what was considered proper attire for a coffee. High heels, skirt suits, full makeup, hats and gloves...Wow!! As they came in each placed a business card printed with their full name (ie: Mrs. Jeffrey A. Pederson) in a dish by the door. That would let all concerned be aware that she attended that particular coffee. The elegantly dressed women all sat around around a very ornate table and drank coffee from fine china. They then began chatting about how someone had heard that a women had tried to enter the commissary wearing pants...can you believe it? Pants!! Of course she was turned away at the door...as you would expect when you are not complying with the commissary/PX dress code of skirt or dress...and don't even think about coming with any of your children that might be under ten years of age. After the commissary gossip ended their conversation turned to an even more appalling rumor...an officer's wife they knew intended on getting a job!! GASP! How would she be able to attend her mandatory functions and what would that do to her husbands OER? (officer evaluation report) Gossip around the table was immediately stopped when the General's wife entered. All the women stood to acknowledge her entry. She told them to be seated and said she chose not to bring a flag with two stars for her place setting, as was customary, because she found that to be too pompous. (Big of her...) The General's wife then briefed the ladies on what upcoming functions must be attended and what attire would be expected. After the "General's wife" had spoken each woman took the time to briefly discuss their lives as military wives...how many different places they had lived, what wars their husbands had bravely fought in, etc. It was so enlightening to hear these woman, who had spent over 30 years as Army wives, share their experiences. The "coffee" was ended shortly thereafter because the ladies needed to get home to make certain dinner was on the table as their husbands arrived home from work. They got up, said their farewells and off they went.

Wow...talk about a change in times huh?! Sometimes as military wives we become consumed with our husband's job. It's hard not to when our lives literally revolve around it, but apparently nothing compared to how it used to be! I have to say, as I sat there watching this skit, I thought how so many things have changed and how so many of them will never change. Underneath all the pomp and circumstance these wives faced many of the same challenges we do...move after move after move, night after night in the field, deployments. They were able to face these challenges because they had each other...they had a bond that really only military spouses can understand...they had their military family. God Bless our troops and God Bless our military family...yesterday's, today's and tomorrow's.

Almost Recuperated

First off, let me say...YEAH TRACY!!! You started your own blog and now I can read about you everyday!!! For those of you who may have skipped my first entry, my sis Tracy has just taken a six month job in Ireland. I have successfully bullied her into starting her own blog so I can keep up to date with her European adventures!! For all concerned...she did make it safely to London and seems to be acclimating well to her new surroundings. She'll be in London for a week before traveling on to Ireland where she will be living. I love my sister dearly, but right now I'm so jealous I can't stand it...she is only miles from the Winthrop family and that makes me tear up right now just thinking about it!! Sometimes I miss Joy (and Family) so much it's like a big hole in my heart...and now's one of those times...anyway...I'm not bitter Trac, really I'm not!! LOL
Well here in Lawton we have almost recuperated from your trip home to Kentucky. The girls and I went last week for spring break. Other than the stomach flu, minor concussion and two CT scans we had a great time!! LOL All in all we really did enjoy our vacation. We got to spend quality time with Gigi and Pa...and Sam too...who by the way absolutely loved Sarah. I think it's because they happen to be almost the same size!! We also got to say goodbye to Tracy and as a special treat Tommy, Sheena and the boys came to visit!! Our time with them was too short, but we did get to have a quickie first birthday party for Westin and what a cutie he is!!! (I'll add their picture as soon as I figure out how to download Sheena's pictures into my photo file!!)
Sarah took a little tumble off the couch and ended up in the ER with a minor concussion. My long time (I put old first, but that just sounded bad) friend Dezetta and her husband Shane along with Gigi, Pa, Maddy and I sat at the ER for 4 hours waiting to find out Sarah was fine!! Yikes!! You sure know who loves you after 4 long hours at Baptist East!! Immediately following the concussion Sarah came down with a stomach bug. I can't remember ever doing so much laundry in a four day period!! Sarah's bug seems to have finally worked it way out of her system and she's almost back to herself...except she's grown quickly accustomed to being held every waking moment and that's not going over so well now that Gig isn't here to help out in that department!!
Maddy's back in school and her sleep schedule seems to be back to normal...thank goodness!! I've never known a kid who needs her beauty sleep like my little Maddy!! I read her report card right before sending her off to school on Monday morning....probably good I didn't see it before we left the previous weekend!! It would have given me something to whine and gripe about the whole trip!! She got a C in reading... a C!!!!! First of all who gets grades in Kindergarten. I thought you got smiley faces and check marks...oh no, not at Lawton Christian School...seems she's behind in reading because she still needs to sound out her words. Can you believe it??? A five year old that can't read by sight or at the very least sound it out in her head...my goodness the disgrace!! I guess we're just going to have to start looking for a tutor...AAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Talk about the "Hurried Child."
I think Jeff's glad to have us back home. He's not super thrilled about the girl noises that he has been free of for over a week!! but he'll get used to it again!! And me...I'm just glad I made it back in town before the half of a half Tuesday night VIP sale!! Gotta run, dinner needs to be on the go before I head over to half of a half...it's the one thing I won't be late for!!!

My First Blog

My goodness I feel so young and hip...I'm writing on my very own blog!! To be honest, along with young and hip, I feel amazingly self centered writing solely about the happenings in our little family and assumming anyone would want to read it. But I am! Actually "The Bobbitt Adventures" gave me the idea...thanks Bobbitt! I started reading Monica's blog daily and it made me feel like a part of their lives again...something I haven't been in almost four years. I could hear her voice when I read the stories and I reconnected with the kids...kids I once again haven't seen in almost four years. It was great! I look forward to a new entry daily...so keep 'em coming Mon! Anyhow, my sister Tracy left yesterday on the adventure of a lifetime...a six month job in Ireland...WOW!! I know talking on the phone won't be easy and I so want to live vicariously through her...so....I told her she should write a blog like Monica. She agreed!! As chance would have it my sister in law Sheena was standing there as well. Since my sole communication with their family is through my brother, and if you've ever spoken to my brother you'd know that the information I get is very very limited and I hate that!! So, you guessed it, I decided to pressure Sheena to start a blog too. Since I'm bullying so many people into opening a window into their lives for me, I decided it would only be fair to open ours to them as well! So here I am writing a blog...a young hip and trendy blog I might add!! LOL
I can definitely tell you that my posts will not be as frequent or as elequent as Monica's, but I will work very hard to keep this updated!! I hope you all enjoy being a part of our lives and if any of you feel like starting your very own blog please do and be sure and send me the link!! Until next time!!
